Peruvian Beads

Recently I ordered some foil glass beads from eebeads, but, instead, they sent me some odd beads which at that point in time I would never consider ordering or using or wearing.

I quickly called them and left a message. I was so distraught about not getting ”my” foil beads that I emailed them as well. Someone called me from eebeads the next day and asked what was sent instead. I tried to describe them and told her they seemed to have been made with clay. Later that day I received an email and they were sending me the foil beads which I desparately wanted.

I thought to myself why not try to find out what kind of beads these things are. They are so unlike beautiful square foil beads how could anyone make such a mistake. I found their pictures under ceramic and polymer/fimo beads. The description for them states: “Peruvian Ceramic Beads are hand painted beads from Peru.  We carry both the traditional smooth beads, and wonderful engraved beads too!  Please expect a bit of variation since these are hand made. Hole size on the larger beads is approximately 2.5mm.”

Then I started to examine the beads I received more carefully and began to understand their beauty and useability. Their designs I’m sure are based on designs of the Peruvian people who make them. Most are drums and ovals but there plenty of different shapes including little fishes, angels, dragonflies, and round beads. What cute beads!

Then farther down the page I spotted similar beads from India which included bumpy beads. Then the beads by Keith O’Connor appeared. Then ceramic beads by Kay Derr were also shown. What lovely beads I thought. I’ve been missing a whole area of beads that are truly worthwhile.

I haven’t bought any of these beads yet but I will as I am still thinking about how to use them appropriately. I know they don’t go with Swarovski crystals and pearls. Simple colored glass beads might be a good partner to let these ceramic beads shine.

Do they need silver and gold accent beads I’m wondering. It’s possible they don’t. I should design them so they stand out on their own. Their colors and designs should take center stage.

I might even design some necklaces and bracelets for the winter season to go with “brown” which seems to be the “in” color this season. That shouldn’t be hard to do.

By the way eebeads has some very interesting beads as you can see. Their address is   eebeads
